Bio: Nicole Laemmle was born and raised in Freiburg, Germany, a region, known as the three corner country, with France and Switzerland being immediate neighbors. Her mother, a weaver and painter from early on understood her daughters passion for art supplying her with any medium she wanted to experience. From 1992 on Nicole studied jewelry design and painting in Germany and Basel, Switzerland. She graduated from the Kunstgewerbeschule, Basel in 1995. Since than she worked as an independent jewelry designer and painter exhibiting at numerous regional galleries. Aside from creating her own work she has been focused on bringing people together by connecting artists from Germany and the neighboring countries through talks, workshops and exhibition.
In 1999 she received a scholarship from the Carl Duisberg Gesellschaft, sponsored by the Ministry of Education and Investigation of the Federal Republic of Germany, to study Fine Art and Jewelry Design at the Fashion Institute of Technology, NYC. living in New York City.
Living in New York City, Nicole discovered her abstract paintings. Being away from the familiar she grew up with yet being part of the cosmopolitain mecca she always was seeking for, diving into the unknown, she discovered painting lines in a lively variety and rhythmic interplay, creating vibrant dialogues, visually kinetic works. She enjoys working back and forth between colors, disregarding the rules of forefront and background, studying light, form and color interaction. A continuous search for challenges and solutions. In addition to her personal pursuit in art she has co-founded 4heads, a non profit arts organization which enables artists to exhibit their work for free in a month long art fair, leaning back to her origins.
"Art is a language which cannot be replaced by another language and reaches out to us to nourish our being." - Nix Laemmle
Artist Statement I am an abstract painter. Being born to a family of clock-makers and weavers my attention to precision and consciousness for color is embedded in me. From an early age on I found solice in color. It is the depth, the play and sensation of color, the infinite possibilities of color compositions and movement that intrigue me. I enjoy working with acrylic paint which enables me to paint layer over layer creating a back and forth between light and dark, creating visually kinetic works. I don’t have a conscious plan while painting, I feel challenged but calm, a certain harmony between the two, a continuation. My work is called Continuum as a continuum is something that keeps on going, changing slowly over time, like the continuum of the four seasons. I aim to create abstract compositions, visually and intellectually stimulating that communicate a sense of tranquility and privacy, poetic and meditative qualities that I desire.
