A Cross Section of the Culture

A Cross Section of the Culture:

The portraits are a free association of different characters that form a cross section of the culture at any given time. Political figures, actors and entertainers, celebrities and musicians as well as ordinary folk make up this ever changing cast of characters that appear in the media and stay in our consciousness briefly or ongoing.
In doing this series I found that the fluidity of the media made it somewhat difficult to identify the characters with any certainty. For instance “the Shah of Iran”(the portrait with the uniform and  yellow background has been identified as Ceausesu from Romania or some South American dictator…and this shifting identity has happened with numerous characters. It gives the series a certain quality where the characters change but remain the same or almost.
