Upcoming: Weighing of the Heart

Weighing of the Heart: Opening Reception September 18th 5 -7pm

As the “goodbyes” have added up, I have been, lately, considering how much my heart weighs. The heart, not porous, as I would prefer to think about it, so that in my mind, things, directions, decisions, feelings, could easily come and go. There would be no blockage, or buildup of confusion, fear, or grief. No lingering of decisions made. I preferred to, rather naively, think it was more akin to the easy flow of the lungs in and out, in and out…but the heart is not, porous. It is, in fact, highly dense and hollow. And waterproof.Like a balloon.  What comes in must stay and be kept separate from the other workings. Yes it does the job of circulating, but everything returns. Again and again. The Egyptians believed that the heart kept a record of a persons life.  In order for a person to move into the afterlife, their heart must be weighed. And it was weighed against a feather. Well ok... while they were probably more concerned with deeds and such, I prefer to think of what’s held in that chamber as how I experience this life, what I have sought out, and what I've held onto, how I have hurt or been hurt, which, of course, all leads to the bits and pieces I have created. As always, with my body of work, my hope is that I have made a small pin prick in that heart vessel, in that waterproof balloon.  A little steady release of the things that weigh on me. Otherwise, what chance have I got against a feather? Gigi Mills
